Bottle Conditioned Screening + Fonta Flora Q&A

Bottle Conditioned Screening + Fonta Flora Q&A

6:30 PM - 9:30 PM | West Asheville, NC

Monday, August 21, 2023

Lambics have a lot of hype these days (as they should!), but 20 years ago they were practically forgotten. Join us at The Grail Moviehouse for a lambic tasting and screening of Bottle Conditioned from Academy Award® nominated filmmaker Jerry Franck. Franck explores the small Belgian community of lambic beer, where brewers and blenders of different generations wrestle with tradition and the increased demand for their rare beers.

Doors open at 6:30 pm, grab your lambic taster, then sit back and relax. The movie starts at 7 pm. Stick around after the screening for a discussion with Fonta Flora co-founder and creative director, Todd Boera.

What is a lambic?

Lambic style beers have an air of mystery and intrigue. While the style has deep roots and tradition in Belgium it’s only within the last decade or so that this category of beer has started to emerge in the United States. American breweries like Allagash, Jester King, and others have developed their interpretations of lambic beer here in the US. Known for its funky, fruity, sometimes barnyard-y flavor lambic beers are characterized by their complexity and balance.

“If horsiness or hay-like or cheesiness is all you’re getting out of lambic it won’t be a pleasant experience,” says Kevin Martin, the Director of Brewery Operations at Portland, Oregon-based Cascade Brewing (a brewery well known for its sour and fruit beer). “If integrated with the smell of apricots or nuttiness that balance is the real beauty of lambics.” Read more from Hop Culture.
